Primitive Fire Starting: Make Your Own Bow and Drill

Using pioneer tools such as a maul and froe, shaving horse, and brace and bit, learn to fashion all the parts for a primitive bow and drill fire-starting kit from wood.  Bring woodcarving knives or utility knives if you have them.  This hands-on program will take place in the Rowe Visitor Center.  Recommended for adults or children 7 and up with a parent.  Space is limited and preregistration is required.  A parent and child may share one kit.

Delve into the science and lore of turning sap into sweet maple syrup.  This program includes a guided hike in the sugarbush, a look into the Native American origins of sugaring and a visit to the Sugar House.  Scouts or homeschool students will tap a tree with a hand drill; help with sugaring work, and sample warm maple syrup right off the evaporator.  This program takes place outdoors, regardless of weather.  Preregistration is required.  Minimum to register is 10 scouts.  Large groups will be separated into smaller groups of 10 or fewer.  Each group of 10 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.  Hour-long hikes begin at the Sugar House.

Have you ever wanted to spend the night at Cincinnati Nature Center?  Curious about what happens in the forest when the sun goes down?  Here’s your chance!  On Friday February 26, join us for an overnight adventure at the Retreat House.  Families will enjoy a night hike, craft, campfire, and much more.  A light breakfast will be provided.  You will sleep in dorm style rooms equipped with two bunk beds to accommodate four people.  Rooms may be divided between two families with only one adult and one child.  Appropriate for 6 and older.  Preregistration required by February 5.

The Easter Bunny will be making a very special visit to Miami Township Civic Center.  He has invited children to come and make crafts, decorate cookies, play games and have their faces painted.  There is NO EGG HUNT at this event.  Eggs will be distributed by the Easter Bunny & helpers.  Parents are encouraged to bring your cameras to take that “special picture”.

River Village Easter Parade/Spring Festival on the Ohio

Crafters will be ready to show their items, starting at 11:00 AM along Front Street to Suzanna Way.  Photos with the Easter Bunny will be available for a fee.  Artists & Potters will be displaying their fine works at the Front Street Gallery, along with the Park filled with more crafters, artists, etc. The Businesses will be open all day.  Line up for the parade 12:00-12:30 in the 400-500 block of Front Street.  If you are interested in putting together a float or being a crafter, or decorating a bonnet or hat to walk in the parade please go to our website and click on the Easter Egg for more information.  The parade will include Victor E Viking the NKU mascot, Snappy Pizza, Frisch’s Big Boy, The Easter Bunny himself and of course a few chickens.  Ronald McDonald will be joining us a t 4:00PM to do a magic show for the kid’s.

Come for a long hike on the “Perimeter Trail” with Executive Director Bill Hopple.  We will start and end at the Visitor Center, staying on the outer trails in between.  Terrain is moderate.  Distance is 7.5 miles with an additional 1.5-mile option.  Pack your lunch and water bottle-we will stop along the trail midway through the hike.  Ages 12 and up.  No dogs please.  Pre registration is required.  Meet in the lobby of the Rowe Visitor’s Center.

The dedication will coincide with the weekend encampment of the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Civil War reenactment Company.  The Cook Farm area along with the encampment dedication is open to the public free with no admission. 

 

The local herb club “Herbs and Such” will offer food for sale at the cabin site throughout the weekend and the Goshen Methodist Church will offer bean soup, corn bread and other items at the church across Goshen Road from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM.  All events will be updated on the society’s website.

Our streams are an important habitat for many species, and with so many visitor’s we’re careful to limit the amount of activity along it’s banks.  That’s why it’s a special treat to have the opportunity to splash, play and explore within the boundaries of stream access B any Saturday in June, July and August.  Enjoy the cooler temperatures as you descend to the stream, where a naturalist will be stationed with collecting equipment, id sheets and other information.  The staff will serve as facilitators only; parents must be present to chaperone children at all times.

The fourth stop on the HFP Racing Triathlon and Duathlon Series is at East Fork State Park.  This race site has been a Cincinnati tradition for more than 25 years.  Triathletes will start off with a 750 meter swim (1 lap Sprint, 2-laps Olympic) in East Fork Lake.  Duathletes will start off with challenging 5K out and back run.  The bike courses feature a rolling loop east of Rt 125 for both the sprint and international distance races.  The final run is an out and back 5K run (1-lap Sprint, 2 –laps Olympic) that features a big hill at the start, the levels out for the remaining run.

Trail Ride for the Cure is an equestrian fundraiser for Breast Cancer.  Proceeds are donated to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure, Greater Cincinnati Affiliation.  Each rider pays registration fee of $30 and is encouraged to raise pledge money, we offer incentives.  We offer a full day ride; a half-day ride or you can ride on your own.  The full day ride serves lunch on the trail.   The day is full of friends and fun with raffles, silent auctions, as well as time to visit vendors on the grounds.

The annual River Village Christmas along the Ohio River is something families must see.  It is an outdoor event on Front Street with the Ohio River in full view.  This Holiday festival includes carolers, horse and carriage rides while looking on the Ohio River, Shopping in quaint village shops, Restaurants for dining, smells of the season from baked goods, vendors and crafters galore.  Santa will be there arriving by boat.
